My name is Sophia. I grew up in California and Oregon, but recently moved to Boston for a PhD program at Boston University in British literature, studying 19th century authors like Charles Dickens and George Eliot. Though I love the academic world, during the summers, I get the opportunity to return to my love of caring for children.

Over the years, I have been given many opportunities to care for children. You might say that child care is in my blood. My grandmother was a kindergarten teacher; my mother is a 5th grade teacher; and I have been babysitting regularly for families since I was 12 years old, starting early with my younger cousins. Though eleven years has grown and changed me in many ways, my love for children and desire to care for them has not. In addition to consistent babysitting for a number of families in the past, I have done short-term nannying for a family with two elementary-age boys and a two-year-old girl.

I also worked for a few years for a similar babysitting agency in Los Angeles, California while studying for my Bachelor’s degree at Biola University. During my time working for the agency, I babysat for all types of families, for children from 4 months old to 10 years old, in both homes and hotel contexts. I have had extensive experience with a child with Type I diabetes and am familiar with the regulation involved. I am also up to date with my CPR and First Aid certification.

For the past five years, I have been involved with childcare at my churches both here and in California. At different points, I have been in charge of the nursery, one-year-old class, and the three-year-old class. I’ve also volunteered at an after-school program for elementary-age children growing up in gang-ridden neighborhoods in Fullerton, CA.

It may come as no surprise (as a literature PhD student) that one of my favorite activities to do with children is to read. Though, I promise, I do break out the Dr. Seuss instead of the Jane Austen when I babysit. Writing is another passion of mine. For a couple years, I worked freelance as a writer for an elementary school curriculum. This time taught me many ways to spark children’s imagination in both learning and play environments. In my free time, I love listening to music and playing guitar. I also love to be outside, both exploring the city and trying to get outside it into nature. I was on my high school swim team, and I still enjoy swimming when I get the chance.

Most importantly, as a babysitter, I understand that every family is different and am more than willing to work with each individual family to provide the specific care that they desire for their children.
